To convert other file formats to the "3D CAD Data Exchange" file type, you need software like SolidWorks or a similar tool.
About STEP files
A .STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product model data) file is a widely used neutral 3D CAD format. It allows engineers and designers to share 3D models between completely different software ecosystems. These files store 3D objects using mathematically precise NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) geometry, ensuring dimensions remain highly accurate. .STEP files can be opened by major industrial software like SolidWorks, Autodesk Fusion 360, and open-source alternatives like FreeCAD. You can read more about the underlying standard on Wikipedia. Despite its industry-standard status, the .STEP format has massive drawbacks. Because it acts as an intermediary, it strips out the parametric feature history of the native CAD model. You receive a "dumb solid" that is extremely difficult to edit or modify natively. Furthermore, .STEP files are usually stored as plain ASCII text, meaning file sizes become bloated and difficult to email for complex assemblies. They also lack modern web browser support and typically fail to carry complex rendering textures. To actually use the file for modern applications, you must convert it. For 3D printing, convert to STL or 3MF. For displaying the 3D model on a website or AR application, convert to GLTF or GLB. If you need to import the geometry into a rendering suite like Blender, convert to OBJ. Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your STEP file.
If you want to convert STEP file to DWG, KM, SLDPRT, PDF, DXF, DGN, RVT or RFA, you can use SolidWorks or similar software from the "3D CAD Model Interoperability" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to STEP, try SolidWorks or another comparable tool in the "3D CAD Model Interoperability" category.
The STEP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our STEP converter.
