About SAT files
A .SAT file (Standard ACIS Text) is an ASCII-based 3D vector format used by the ACIS geometric modeling kernel to store complex geometry, including wireframes, surfaces, and solid objects. It serves as a bridge for exchanging precise 3D data between CAD applications like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and TurboCAD.
While .SAT files provide high-precision B-Rep (Boundary Representation) data, they introduce distinct challenges. As a text-based format, files are significantly larger and slower to parse than their binary equivalent, SAB. A frequent problem is "version mismatch"; if a .SAT file is exported using a newer ACIS kernel version (e.g., v28) than your receiving software supports, the file will fail to open or import with missing geometry. Additionally, these files contain mathematically exact curves rather than meshes, meaning they cannot be directly used for 3D printing or game engines without processing.
For broader engineering interoperability, users should convert .SAT to STEP (STP), which maintains solid geometry hierarchy and is universally accepted by modern CAM/CAD tools. For 3D printing, converting to STL is necessary to tessellate the smooth surfaces into a printable mesh. For web visualization or AR/VR applications, converting to OBJ or GLB is the standard workflow.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SAT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SAT file to ACT, STEP, IQ, STL, BTC, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP or 3DM, you can use AutoCAD or similar software from the "ACIS 3D Geometry Exchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to SAT, try AutoCAD or another comparable tool in the "ACIS 3D Geometry Exchange" category.
The SAT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SAT converter.
