About IPT files
A .ipt file is a proprietary 3D part file created by Autodesk Inventor. It stores the raw data of a single 3D object, including its 2D sketches, 3D features, material properties, and dimensional constraints. It uses the Microsoft Compound File format under the hood. To natively open and edit an .ipt file, you need an active, expensive subscription to Autodesk Inventor. You can also view them with the free Autodesk Viewer. See the Autodesk Inventor Wikipedia page for software history. The main disadvantage of the .ipt format is its strict vendor lock-in. It is proprietary and largely undocumented outside the Autodesk ecosystem. Files can easily exceed hundreds of megabytes depending on feature complexity. Older versions of Inventor cannot open .ipt files saved in newer versions, causing frequent collaboration roadblocks. Furthermore, they are useless for web display and require heavy desktop software. To share geometric data across different CAD systems, you must convert the file. For universal CAD editing, convert to STEP or IGES. For 3D printing, convert to STL or OBJ. Note that parametric history is lost during this conversion; only the raw boundary representation or mesh remains. For 3D web display, convert to GLTF or GLB.
