The .STP file is a standard 3D assembly format defined by the ISO 10303 specification, commonly known as STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product model data). It is universally used in engineering and manufacturing to transfer 3D models between different CAD systems without losing dimensional accuracy. It represents 3D objects using precise mathematical curves and surfaces (NURBS) stored in plain-text ASCII format. These files are typically handled by enterprise-grade software like CATIA, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD.
Despite its status as an industry standard, the .STP format has major disadvantages. Because it relies on plain-text encoding to store highly complex mathematical parameters, file sizes quickly bloat to hundreds of megabytes. They are notoriously slow to parse, computationally heavy, and usually require expensive proprietary software just to view. Furthermore, base .STP files (AP203) do not natively store texture or lighting data, and the format is completely unsupported by web browsers or standard image viewers.
Converting .STP files is essential for practical use outside of an engineering department. To 3D print the model, convert it to STL or 3MF. For web rendering, augmented reality, or integration into game engines, convert to OBJ or GLTF (note that precise mathematical curves will be permanently meshed into polygons during this process).
