A .GLB file is a binary version of the GLTF (GL Transmission Format) standard. It bundles 3D meshes, node hierarchies, cameras, materials, animations, and textures into one self-contained binary file. Developers rely on this format for web-based AR/VR applications, e-commerce 3D viewers, and modern game engines. Minor alternative uses include STK Globe Files and Glulx Blorb Game Files.

The main disadvantage of the .GLB format is that it is a compiled, end-stage delivery format. It is not designed to be a working file. Because the JSON structure and binary payload are packaged together, you cannot easily swap out textures or edit the mesh topology directly without re-importing it into heavy 3D software. Additionally, unoptimized .GLB files with 4K textures will easily exceed 100MB, rendering them useless for mobile web viewing without applying Draco compression.
