Despite its efficiency for web display and Augmented Reality (AR), the .GLB format has significant limitations for 3D creators. Because it is a compiled binary file, it is extremely difficult to edit directly. Textures and geometries are locked inside the archive. If you want to modify a single texture map, you cannot simply open a folder; you must unpack the entire file. Furthermore, older 3D software pipelines and traditional CAD programs like AutoCAD or SolidWorks do not support it natively.
To work around these limits, you must convert the file based on your project goals. For deep editing and animation work in standard software like Maya, convert to FBX. For basic geometry extraction without animations, convert to OBJ. If you need to send the model to a 3D printer, convert to STL. For web developers who need to read the model data, convert to the JSON-based GLTF format.
