Extract text from 3D CAD parts (PRT)
To convert PRT parts to another format, you need Siemens NX or other Cad software.
To convert other file formats to the "3D CAD Part Model" file type, you need software like Siemens NX or a similar tool.
A .PRT file is a 3D CAD part file. It contains parametric solid geometry, surface data, wireframes, and metadata used in mechanical engineering and manufacturing. Engineers use these files to design single physical components before assembling them into larger systems (assemblies).
The two dominant software ecosystems that generate .PRT files are Siemens NX (formerly Unigraphics) and PTC Creo (formerly Pro/ENGINEER). Other platforms like Solid Edge, CADKEY, and MegaCAD also use the .PRT extension. Because different companies use the exact same extension for entirely different, proprietary data structures, a .PRT file created in Siemens NX will not open natively in PTC Creo.
This creates severe interoperability problems. .PRT files are proprietary, heavily encrypted, and locked behind expensive enterprise software licenses. They cannot be viewed in standard operating systems or web browsers. File sizes can easily exceed 500MB for complex parts. If you do not have a $5,000/year seat for the exact software that created the file, you cannot review the design or extract the geometry.
To solve this, you must convert the .PRT file to an open standard.
* For Universal 3D editing, convert to STEP or STP. This preserves the boundary representation (B-rep) solid geometry.
* For Legacy CAD systems, convert to IGES. Note that this may downgrade solid geometry to unstitched surfaces.
* For 3D Printing, convert to STL or OBJ. This meshes the model, destroying the exact curves but creating printer-ready geometry.
* For Viewing, convert to .3D PDF or GLTF.
