About ZIP files
The .ZIP file is a standard compressed data archive format. It bundles multiple files and directories into a single container to reduce storage space and simplify transfers. Originally developed by Phil Katz in 1989 for PKWARE, Inc., the format relies on lossless compression, most notably the DEFLATE algorithm. You can open .ZIP files natively in Windows and macOS, or by using dedicated utilities like WinZip and 7-Zip.
Despite its ubiquity, the .ZIP format has distinct disadvantages. It lacks the advanced compression ratios and robust encryption standards found in modern formats like 7Z or RAR. Users cannot natively edit or interact with files inside a .ZIP; the archive must be extracted to a local drive first. Furthermore, .ZIP files are notorious for masking malicious executables, causing strict attachment blocks by corporate email filters.
For maximum space savings, convert your .ZIP to 7Z. If you are archiving for UNIX-based systems, convert to .TAR.GZ. Drag and drop your file to analyze and extract it - free, online, and without installing software on convert.guru.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ZIP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ZIP file to PDF, JPG, MP4, TTF, RAR, ISO, PNG, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2 or XZ, you can use WinZip or similar software from the "Compressed Archive Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, PKG, RAR or ARJ files to ZIP, try WinZip or another comparable tool in the "Compressed Archive Storage" category.
The ZIP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZIP converter.
