About STE files

The .STE file extension is most commonly utilized as a site setup configuration file by Adobe Dreamweaver. These files store essential web project metadata, including local folder paths, FTP connection credentials, server login details, and remote host addresses formatted in standard XML. In an entirely different context, the .STE extension is occasionally used for 3D computer-aided design models conforming to the ISO 10303 STEP standard, functioning identically to the more common STEP and STP formats utilized by SolidWorks.

The primary disadvantage of an .STE Dreamweaver settings file is that it locks your project configuration inside Adobe's proprietary ecosystem. Sharing these files directly with developers using other IDEs like VS Code or WebStorm is useless, as those editors lack native support for Dreamweaver's specific XML schema. Furthermore, the FTP passwords within these files are often obfuscated or encoded, making manual recovery annoying for developers trying to migrate hosts. For the 3D model variant, using the rare .STE extension instead of the standard STEP frequently causes software recognition failures and import errors in modern CAD viewers.

If you possess a Dreamweaver settings file, the best conversion target is a plain XML or TXT file to safely read the configuration tags and extract server connection strings. If your file is a 3D model, you should rename or convert it to STP, IGES, or OBJ for broader compatibility across 3D rendering environments.

Because .STE files are heavily tied to specific, closed environments or utilize obscure extension naming, standard online converters often fail to process them correctly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as standard XML text or a compressed ZIP archive like those used by Spirent Landslide - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your STE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted STEP, DWT, MNO and COMPRESSION files.

The STE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our STE converter.
