The .3d file extension is a "wildcard" identifier used by several unrelated software ecosystems, creating significant compatibility friction for users. The most dominant origin (over 50%) is Cadwork, a premier CAD/CAM solution for timber construction and carpentry. In this context, the .3d file is often a ZIP-compressed container holding proprietary Building Information Modeling (BIM) data. Because this format is strictly vendor-specific, it cannot be opened by standard 3D modelers like Blender or generic CAD tools like AutoCAD without conversion. This creates a "silo" effect, making it difficult to share project files with structural engineers or architects who rely on Revit or ArchiCAD. To resolve this, Cadwork .3d files should be converted to open BIM standards like IFC, SAT, or STP for editing, or WebGL/PDF for client viewing.
Alternatively, a .3d file may be a legacy typesetting document created by Advent 3B2 (a precursor to modern Arbortext systems). Unlike the CAD format, these contain text and layout instructions for publishing. These files are obsolete and difficult to access on modern operating systems, necessitating conversion to PDF for archiving or XML for content extraction. Less common variants include Survex cave survey data or TeoWin interior design scenes. Identifying the source software is the critical first step before determining the correct conversion target.
