The .SLDASM file type is the standard assembly format for SolidWorks, a leading Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software by Dassault Systèmes. These files function as digital blueprints that coordinate multiple individual part files (SLDPRT) into a single 3D structure, defining how components fit and move together using mathematical constraints called "mates."
While powerful for engineering, .SLDASM files present significant challenges for sharing and collaboration. The most critical issue is dependency: an assembly file does not typically contain the actual 3D geometry of the parts, but rather links to them. If you send someone just the .SLDASM file without the accompanying part files, they will see an empty workspace. Furthermore, the format is proprietary and version-locked; a file saved in SolidWorks 2024 cannot be opened in the 2023 version, and viewing it requires an expensive license or a specialized viewer like eDrawings.
To overcome these barriers, conversion is often necessary. For manufacturing and interoperability with other CAD tools (like Fusion 360 or AutoCAD), converting to neutral formats like STEP (STP) or IGES is standard practice as they preserve geometric precision. For 3D printing, the file must be converted to a mesh format like STL. For visualization in software like Blender, OBJ is preferred. For simple viewing or archiving without specialized software, converting to 3D PDF is the most accessible solution.
