Extract text from SolidWorks assemblies (SLDASM)

To convert other file formats to the "3D Assembly Model" file type, you need software like SolidWorks or a similar tool.
The .SLDASM file is a proprietary 3D CAD assembly format created by 3%A8mes">Dassault Systèmes for its SolidWorks software. These files are used in mechanical engineering and product design to combine multiple individual 3D parts into a single functional machine or structure.
Users often face significant barriers when handling these files. The format is heavily proprietary and typically requires an expensive software subscription to open or edit. Furthermore, .SLDASM files generally do not contain the actual 3D geometry of the components; they only hold the assembly coordinates, constraints, and links to external SLDPRT (part) files. If you receive an assembly without the accompanying part files, it will usually be broken and fail to load.
To share mechanical designs with clients or manufacturers who do not own SolidWorks, you must convert the assembly. The best target formats are STEP or IGES for universal CAD compatibility, or STL for 3D printing. However, converting to these formats usually strips away parametric history and dynamic assembly mates, leaving a static 3D model.
Because this is a closed, complex format built on the Microsoft Compound file structure, standard online converters often fail entirely. They cannot resolve the external part dependencies or parse the proprietary geometry algorithms.
