The .3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is an XML-based data container compressed with ZIP, designed specifically for additive manufacturing (3D printing). Created by the 3MF Consortium (founded by Microsoft and other industry leaders), it is designed to replace older mesh formats. It is supported by modern slicing software like UltiMaker Cura and built-in OS tools like Microsoft 3D Builder.
While .3MF is highly capable - storing meshes, materials, colors, and print profiles in a single archive - it has disadvantages in the real world. Many legacy CAD programs, older 3D printers, and standard game engines do not support it natively. It requires specialized viewers, making it frustrating to share with clients who lack installed 3D software.
To solve compatibility issues, you must convert the file. For universal support with older 3D printers, convert to STL (note: you will lose all color and material data). For editing in standard 3D animation tools, convert to OBJ. For web display and augmented reality (AR), convert to GLTF or GLB.
