The .3MF (3D Manufacturing Format) is a modern, XML-based data standard designed specifically for additive manufacturing and 3D printing. Unlike the antiquated STL format, .3MF encapsulates complete model information - including geometry, materials, colors, textures, and unit definitions - within a single compressed ZIP-based archive. It was developed by the 3MF Consortium to eliminate the common errors and ambiguity associated with older 3D formats.
Despite its technical superiority, .3MF files often present compatibility challenges in workflows dominated by legacy hardware and software. Many older slicers, CNC machines, and CAD tools like earlier versions of AutoCAD still strictly require STL files to function. Furthermore, because .3MF is a complex container format, it cannot be easily parsed or repaired by simple text editors, unlike ASCII-based formats.
