To convert other file formats to the "Slide Image or Map Style" file type, you need software like AutoCAD or a similar tool.

About SLD files

The .SLD file extension is primarily shared between two formats: an AutoCAD Slide Image and an XML-based Styled Layer Descriptor used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In the CAD environment, AutoCAD creates .SLD files as quick raster snapshots of a 2D or 3D viewport. These files were highly useful for presentations on older systems but are inherently limited today because they strip away all vector data and editability. In the mapping sector, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) uses the .SLD extension for XML schemas that dictate how map layers render in GIS software like GeoServer. A major disadvantage of .SLD files is strict context dependency. AutoCAD slides are an obsolete, closed binary format that modern image viewers cannot open without dedicated conversion plugins. They are effectively dead-end display files. Conversely, GIS .SLD files are plain text XML, but their highly specific styling schemas mean they are useless outside of a compliant GIS rendering engine. Other minor uses include proprietary animation files in Age of Empires II and electrical single-line diagrams in DIgSILENT PowerFactory. Standard online converters routinely fail with .SLD files because they cannot guess which of the dozens of internal formats a specific file uses. Target formats depend entirely on the file type. AutoCAD slides should be converted to JPG or PNG for basic viewing. GIS files are typically edited directly as XML or converted to other styling languages like QML. Because these are closed or hyper-specific formats, extracting usable data is difficult. Our analysis can safely inspect the file headers. If it is an XML-based GIS style, we extract the text. If it is a known image format, we can bridge the gap to a standard web-friendly format.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SLD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SLDPRT, QML, SLDDRW, SLDASM, PNG, DWG, SDL, JPG, JPEG, PDF, DXF, ZIP and STL files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SLD file to STL, STEP, LYR, DWG, PDF, QML, PNG, SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX or GEOJSON, you can use AutoCAD or similar software from the "CAD Slide or GIS Style" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to SLD, try AutoCAD or another comparable tool in the "CAD Slide or GIS Style" category.

The SLD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SLD converter.
