An .iam file is a proprietary 3D assembly file created by Autodesk Inventor, used to digitally prototype mechanical products by combining multiple part files (.ipt) into a single functional unit. These files define the positional relationships, constraints, and degrees of freedom between components, rather than storing the geometry of every part internally.
Because .iam files rely on external references, they present significant sharing challenges; sending an assembly file without its associated parts results in "unresolved link" errors and an empty view for the recipient. Furthermore, accessing the native data requires an expensive subscription to the Autodesk ecosystem or a specialized viewer, creating friction for manufacturing partners or clients who do not use Inventor.
To overcome these interoperability hurdles, users should convert .iam files to vendor-neutral formats. For collaboration with other CAD platforms (like SolidWorks or Catia), the STEP or IGES formats are the industry standard as they preserve B-Rep geometry and assembly hierarchy. For 3D printing, converting to STL is necessary, while OBJ or GLB are ideal for visualizing the model in web browsers or AR applications without specialized software.
