About IAM files

The .IAM file is a proprietary 3D assembly format created by Autodesk Inventor. It acts as a master container that defines physical constraints and spatial relationships, linking multiple individual IPT (Inventor Part) files together to form a complete mechanical model. Under the hood, the file relies on the legacy Microsoft Compound File Binary Format.

The biggest disadvantage of .IAM files is their severe lack of portability. They require an expensive Autodesk subscription to open and edit natively. Furthermore, because an .IAM file only references external part files, sharing just the .IAM without the accompanying IPT files is a frequent source of frustration, resulting in broken links and unopenable geometry. The files are also notoriously large and entirely unsupported by standard web browsers.

To share 3D models with manufacturers, clients, or other engineering teams using different software, you must convert the assembly. For editing in external CAD systems like SolidWorks or FreeCAD, convert to STEP or IGES (note that you will lose Inventor-specific parametric history, retaining only the static boundary representation). For 3D printing, convert to mesh formats like STL or 3MF. For web viewing, GLTF or OBJ are the most practical targets.
