About IGES files
The .IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) file is a legacy, vendor-neutral format established in the 1980s to facilitate data exchange between different Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems. It stores 2D or 3D vector information - typically wireframes and NURBS surfaces - in a highly verbose ASCII text structure. While once the industry standard, .IGES files often frustrate modern engineers because they represent geometry as a collection of disjointed surfaces rather than watertight solids. This frequently leads to "naked edges" or gaps that must be manually stitched before the model can be used for simulation or manufacturing in software like SolidWorks or Autodesk Fusion. Furthermore, .IGES strips away all parametric design history, feature trees, and material data, leaving you with "dumb" geometry that is difficult to edit. For mechanical engineering and archiving, converting to STEP (AP203 or AP214) is highly recommended as it maintains superior topological integrity. For 3D printing, you must convert the NURBS data to a mesh format like STL. For web viewing or rendering in tools like Blender, converting to OBJ or GLB is preferred.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IGES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IGES file to STEP, STL, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D or PLY, you can use AutoCAD or similar software from the "CAD Data Exchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP, FBX or PLY files to IGES, try AutoCAD or another comparable tool in the "CAD Data Exchange" category.
The IGES Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IGES converter.
