SLDDRW files are proprietary 2D engineering drawings generated by SolidWorks, the industry-standard mechanical CAD software by Dassault Systèmes. These files serve as the blueprint documentation for 3D parts (SLDPRT) and assemblies (SLDASM), containing dimensions, tolerances, and annotations required for manufacturing.
The primary challenge with .SLDDRW files is their strict dependency on the SolidWorks ecosystem. Opening these files usually requires an expensive SolidWorks license or a specialized viewer like eDrawings. Furthermore, these files are associative, meaning they pull geometry data dynamically from the referenced 3D model files; if the original part file is missing or moved, the .SLDDRW may open as a blank sheet or with broken links, rendering it useless. They are not natively supported by web browsers, mobile devices, or competing CAD platforms like AutoCAD.
To overcome these barriers, conversion is often necessary.
