The .mbs file primarily functions as an Opera Mailbox File, containing emails, contact metadata, attachments, and folder structures created by the now-deprecated Opera Mail client. In rarer cases, it functions as a Mobile Build Session file used by Microsoft Visual Studio. Historically, users relied on the Opera Mail desktop software to access and manage these email archives.
The main disadvantage of the .mbs format is its obsolescence. Because Opera discontinued its standalone email client, modern applications like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird cannot natively open an Opera .mbs file without a complex import process. The format acts as a rigid container, locking your historical email data, making it incredibly frustrating to search for old messages or extract specific file attachments.
