The converter also works in reverse, so you can convert other "Legacy Kindle E-Book Format" formats to MOBI without using software like Calibre or a similar tool.
The .MOBI file is a legacy e-book format initially developed by Mobipocket S.A. and later acquired by Amazon. It was the standard format for early Amazon Kindle devices. You can open and manage these files using free software like Calibre or the FBReader app.
Why do you need to convert it? The .MOBI format is now obsolete. In late 2022, Amazon stopped supporting .MOBI uploads via their Send to Kindle service. The format lacks support for modern typesetting, rich multimedia, and scalable vector graphics. Because it is a heavily proprietary format, it is incompatible with non-Amazon e-readers like Kobo or Nook. Furthermore, older files are often locked with DRM (Digital Rights Management), restricting you from reading legally purchased books on non-approved devices.
For modern hardware, you must convert these files. For universal compatibility across nearly all e-readers (including Apple Books and Google Play Books), convert to EPUB. If you need a fixed layout for archiving or printing on A4/Letter paper, convert to PDF. If you are manually transferring the book onto a newer Kindle device via USB, convert to AZW3. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software. Note that converting .MOBI to EPUB might slightly alter original margins or drop embedded fonts due to differing HTML standards.

The MOBI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MOBI converter.
