About JPG files

The .JPG (or JPEG) file is a lossy compressed raster image format created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. It is the global standard for digital photography and web images due to its adjustable compression, which balances file size and visual quality. You can open and edit .JPG files natively on virtually any OS or using software like XnView MP or Adobe Photoshop. Despite its ubiquity, the .JPG format has severe limitations for modern workflows. It uses lossy discrete cosine transform (DCT) compression, meaning every time you edit and save the file, generation loss occurs, introducing visible artifacting. Furthermore, .JPG does not support transparency (alpha channels), making it useless for overlays, logos, or icons. It also struggles with high-contrast sharp edges, often blurring text or line art. For web performance, convert .JPG to WEBP or AVIF to cut file sizes by up to 30% without further quality loss. For editing and graphic design where you need transparency, convert to PNG. For professional printing or archiving, convert to PDF or TIFF. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
