About SDR files
The .SDR file extension is most commonly associated with SmartDraw, a popular diagramming and flowchart application. These files store vector graphics, text, and layout data for organizational charts, floor plans, and technical diagrams. A significant secondary use case is the Sokkia electronic field book format, which stores raw surveying and topographic data. Other minor uses include Sony digital voice recordings and Allplan CAD schedules. Because SmartDraw uses a highly proprietary format, sharing .SDR files with clients or colleagues who do not have an active subscription is a major downside. Opening a SmartDraw .SDR file usually requires a paid SmartDraw license. Users face severe limitations when attempting to view or embed these diagrams in standard web browsers or word processors. Similarly, Sokkia .SDR survey files are locked into specific GIS or CAD ecosystems. To resolve these compatibility issues, conversion is necessary. For SmartDraw files intended for web use or sharing, convert to SVG (for scalable vector editing) or PDF (for secure, print-ready document sharing). If you are dealing with Sokkia survey data, converting to CSV or DXF is recommended to import coordinates into standard spreadsheet or CAD software.
