An .EML file is a standard electronic mail message saved by an email client. It contains the email routing headers (sender, recipient, subject, date), the main body in plain text or HTML, and embedded attachments encoded in MIME Base64 format. You can open these files using dedicated desktop applications like Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, or Apple Mail. Storing individual emails as .EML files is highly inefficient for large archives and presents several usability challenges. Opening an .EML file without a configured email client typically opens a text editor, displaying an unreadable wall of raw MIME headers and Base64 encoded strings. Web browsers do not natively render .EML files, and any attached files remain trapped inside the text block, making them impossible to access without specialized decoding software.
