About BIN files

A .BIN file is a generic binary file used for a wide variety of purposes, most notably as a CD/DVD Disc Image (copy of a disc's raw data), a firmware update for routers and devices, or a compressed data container for games (e.g., GOG.com installers).

Because the .BIN extension describes the structure (binary) rather than the content, users often face significant friction: operating systems like Windows and macOS do not natively know how to open them. A .BIN file acts as a locked box; without the correct context or companion file (like a CUE file for disc images), the data is inaccessible. Users frequently encounter these files when downloading legacy software, upgrading system BIOS, or handling MacBinary encoded files transferred from older Macintosh systems.

To make this file usable, the conversion target depends on the file's origin:
