About TMX files
The .TMX (Translation Memory eXchange) file is the industry-standard XML format used to transfer translation memory data between different Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools. Originally developed by LISA (Localization Industry Standards Association), it allows linguists to migrate databases of translated segments between software like Trados Studio, Phrase, and MemoQ.
While TMX is excellent for interoperability, it presents significant challenges for general access. Because it is a raw XML text file, it is difficult for humans to read without specialized software. These files can easily exceed hundreds of megabytes, making them too heavy for standard text editors like Notepad to open without crashing. furthermore, stakeholders who do not own expensive CAT tool licenses ($500+) often cannot view the translation assets contained within. A secondary, less common use for the .TMX extension is for tile maps created by Tiled, used in 2D game development.
To make the data accessible for review, auditing, or cleaning, users frequently convert TMX to Microsoft Excel (.XLSX) or CSV. This allows for easy filtering and editing of source/target segments in a spreadsheet environment. For strictly archiving or sharing a read-only view of the translation memory, converting to PDF is the ideal solution.
Convert.Guru analyzes your TMX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert TMX file to CSV, XLIFF, TXT, SDLXLIFF, JSON, TBX, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI or CFG, you can use Trados Studio or similar software from the "Translation Memory Exchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to TMX, try Trados Studio or another comparable tool in the "Translation Memory Exchange" category.
The TMX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TMX converter.
