Convert a file to TMX
To convert other file formats to the "Translation Memory XML" file type, you need software like Trados Studio or a similar tool.
About TMX files
The .TMX file is primarily a Translation Memory eXchange file. It is an open XML standard originally created by the Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA) to allow translation memories to be shared between different Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools. Software like Trados Studio, Phrase, and memoQ use .TMX to store aligned source and target text segments. A secondary use for .TMX is as a Tiled Map XML file created by Tiled for 2D game level design.
While .TMX is a localization standard, working with it is frustrating outside of specialized software. These files are pure XML, meaning they are bloated with tags and difficult for human readers to parse. Large translation memories often exceed 500MB, causing standard text editors to crash instantly. Furthermore, you cannot easily edit the translations, send them to a client for review, or load them into a standard spreadsheet without processing. CAT tools also require expensive monthly subscriptions or perpetual licenses, making casual review of a .TMX file impossible for most users.
For reviewing translations or editing, convert .TMX to XLSX or CSV. This turns the complex XML database into a clean, two-column spreadsheet. If you need to import the data into a different translation tool, converting to XLIFF or TBX might be required. For game developers, converting a Tiled .TMX map to JSON makes it easier to load into web engines. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software on convert.guru.

The TMX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TMX converter.
