About TXT files
The .TXT file is a universal plain text document format. It stores raw text strings without any visual formatting like bolding, italics, fonts, or images. Developers, system administrators, and everyday users rely on .TXT files for everything from basic notes and application logs to storing JSON and XML data. You can open them using native OS tools like Windows Notepad, Apple TextEdit, or advanced code editors like Notepad++.
The primary disadvantage of the .TXT format is its complete lack of styling, structure, and media support. It is inadequate for formal documents, presentations, or complex data structuring. Furthermore, cross-platform users frequently encounter annoying text encoding issues (such as UTF-8 versus UTF-16 LE mismatches) or line-break errors (CRLF vs LF) when sharing .TXT files between Windows and macOS. The files also offer zero pagination, making their layout unpredictable when printed on physical paper.
To solve these limits, you must convert the file to a richer format. For sharing and printing with a locked visual layout, convert .TXT to PDF. To add text styling, tables, and embed images, convert it to DOCX for Microsoft Word. If the text file contains comma-separated tabular data or server logs, convert it to CSV or XLSX for spreadsheet analysis. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The TXT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TXT converter.
