About XLF files
The .XLF extension is primarily associated with the XLIFF (XML Localization Interchange File Format), an XML-based industry standard used to exchange translation data between CAT (Computer-Aided Translation) tools like Trados Studio and MemoQ. While robust for software localization, .XLF files are notoriously difficult for non-technical stakeholders to review. The raw XML structure is cluttered with tags, making it hard to focus on the text, and casual editing in a standard text editor often breaks the file structure, rendering it unusable. Additionally, proprietary tools required to visualize these files correctly can be expensive. For client reviews or editing in a familiar grid layout, users should convert .XLF to XLSX (Excel) or CSV. To move translation memories between different software ecosystems, converting to TMX is the standard solution. Less commonly, an .XLF file may be a legacy dashboard source file created by SAP Xcelsius (now SAP Crystal Dashboard Design), which functions as a specialized ZIP archive.
