About TBX files

The .TBX extension primarily denotes a TermBase eXchange file, an XML-based industry standard (ISO 30042) used to interchange terminology data (glossaries) between translation software. While it ensures interoperability between tools like SDL Trados Studio and MemoQ, the raw format is verbose XML that is difficult for humans to read or edit directly. Users often struggle with strict schema validation errors or the inability to quickly view term lists without specialized, expensive software. A secondary, distinct use of this extension is for ArcGIS Toolboxes created by Esri ArcGIS. These files contain geoprocessing tools, models, and scripts. Legacy versions may be binary (Microsoft Compound File), while newer iterations are text-based. For translation professionals, the most practical workflow is converting .TBX to XLSX or CSV for easy editing in spreadsheets, then converting back for import. For GIS users, the goal is often migrating these toolboxes to Python scripts (pyt) or upgrading to the modern .atbx format supported by ArcGIS Pro.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TBX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TMX, TXT, XLSX, ZIP, TIBX, LOG, TWBX, TWB, PDF and APK files.

The TBX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TBX converter.
