About SPL files
The .SPL file extension primarily represents a Windows Print Spool file. When you send a document to a printer in Microsoft Windows, the Windows Print Spooler service temporarily saves the print data as an .SPL file in the system directory before sending it to the physical printer. It is often accompanied by a SHD (Shadow) file containing job metadata. These files are typically encoded in Enhanced Metafile (EMF) format, XML Paper Specification (XPS), or raw printer language like PCL. Secondary uses for the .SPL extension include electronic schematic diagrams created in ABACOM sPlan, application package archives for Splunk, and legacy FutureSplash animations. The main disadvantage of Windows .SPL files is that they are highly proprietary, hardware-dependent, and not meant for manual viewing. If a print job crashes, the .SPL file gets stranded in the system folder, and standard document viewers cannot open it. To recover a stuck print document, you must convert it.
