The .SHD extension primarily represents the Allplan Shadow Calculation Data file, generated by Nemetschek Allplan for 3D architectural rendering. These files act as a cache for shadow computations and are strictly internal; they cannot be opened or converted independently of the main project file. Users typically encounter them when managing project folders, but they do not contain viewable geometry on their own.
However, if found in the System32\spool\PRINTERS directory, the file is a Windows Print Spool Shadow file. In this context, the .SHD file serves as a header containing metadata (document name, user, priority) for a print job, while the actual page content resides in a paired SPL file. Users often seek to convert these files to PDF to recover lost print jobs after a system crash. While the .SHD file itself cannot be converted to an image, its corresponding SPL file can often be rendered into PDF or EMF using specialized spool viewing software.
