The .SHD file extension primarily acts as a CAD shadow calculation data file utilized by Nemetschek Allplan software. It stores pre-calculated lighting and shadow rendering information for complex 3D architectural models. Secondary uses include temporary shadow files created by the Microsoft Windows Print Spooler to store print job configurations, and photovoltaic shading scene files used by PVsyst software.
The massive disadvantage of the .SHD format is its highly proprietary and closed nature. These files are strictly tied to their parent software. Allplan .SHD files cannot be opened by standard image viewers, and Windows Spooler .SHD files are useless without their companion SPL data files.
