About LAY6 files

A .lay6 file is the native project format used by ABACOM Sprint-Layout 6.0 for designing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs).

These files contain the complete vector architecture of a circuit board, including track layouts, solder pads, silk screen layers, and drill coordinates. While Sprint-Layout is praised for its simplicity, the .lay6 format acts as a proprietary container. It is not backward compatible with previous versions (Sprint-Layout 5.0 uses LAY) and cannot be opened by standard professional EDA tools like Altium Designer or KiCad directly. This creates a significant bottleneck when sending designs to board houses (manufacturers) that require industry-standard data or sharing designs with colleagues who do not own the software license.

To overcome these limitations, users must typically convert the file based on the intended destination:

For Manufacturing: The critical conversion is to Gerber RS-274X (for copper layers) and Excellon (for drilling). Most professional PCB manufacturers require these formats rather than the native project file.
For Documentation & Web: Converting to PDF, JPG, or BMP allows for easy viewing, checking, and archiving without requiring the specialized ABACOM viewer.
For Machine Milling: Designs are often exported to HPGL (PLT) for isolation milling on CNC machines.
