About LAY files
The .LAY file extension is primarily used as a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout design file generated by ABACOM Sprint-Layout. Due to its generic name, it is heavily fragmented and acts as a container for spatial arrangements across many industries. You will find .LAY files used for 2D/3D CAD drawings in Graphisoft ArchiCAD, plot descriptions in Tecplot 360, and arcade machine artwork configurations for the MAME Emulator. This extreme fragmentation is the main disadvantage of the format. When you receive a .LAY file, your operating system will likely guess the wrong application or fail to open it entirely. Most .LAY files are locked in proprietary binary formats, meaning you cannot read them without expensive or highly specialized software. Sharing these files directly is impractical because the recipient will hit a frustrating wall if they do not own the exact same software version. To make your layout accessible, conversion is strictly necessary. For PCB manufacturing, convert your .LAY file to the industry-standard Gerber format. For web sharing or client review, convert to PDF, PNG, or WebP to guarantee cross-device compatibility. For archiving CAD drawings, target DXF or DWG.

The LAY Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LAY converter.
