About RPT files
The .RPT file format is primarily used by SAP Crystal Reports to store data reporting layouts and database query results. These files are common in corporate environments for generating business intelligence documents. In other cases, .RPT files are plain text outputs from Microsoft SQL Server or raw account statements generated by core banking systems like those used by Punjab National Bank and Union Bank of India. The biggest disadvantage of the Crystal Reports .RPT format is its proprietary nature. You cannot open these files without installing dedicated, expensive SAP software or specific viewer tools. They are not supported by web browsers, making them terrible for sharing. Furthermore, bank-generated .RPT files are often poorly formatted text that is difficult to read. Converting these files is essential for practical use. For sharing and archiving, convert .RPT to PDF to freeze the layout. For data extraction and editing, convert to CSV or XLSX so you can manipulate the data in Microsoft Excel. If you need web display, convert to HTML. Note that converting complex Crystal Reports to plain text formats may lose layout styling, but the core data will remain intact.
