About EMF files
The .EMF file extension stands for Enhanced Metafile. It is a 32-bit vector graphic format developed by Microsoft to replace the older 16-bit WMF format. Primarily used in the Windows ecosystem, EMF files store vector lines, curves, and text, as well as embedded raster bitmaps. You can open them using built-in Windows tools like Microsoft Paint or cross-platform vector editors like Inkscape. However, .EMF is a legacy format with severe disadvantages outside of Windows. Web browsers do not natively support EMF files, meaning you cannot display them directly on HTML websites. Apple macOS and Linux systems often fail to render EMF files accurately without third-party software. Additionally, because EMF can encapsulate both vector and raster data, scaling an EMF file sometimes results in heavily pixelated raster elements if the file was not authored purely in vector paths. To make these files universally usable across modern systems, you need to convert them. For web design and scalable browser graphics, convert .EMF to SVG.
