About TMP files

A .TMP file is a temporary file created by software programs or operating systems to store data while a process is running. Applications like Microsoft Office and web browsers generate these files to hold backup copies of documents, partially downloaded files, or cached images. Once the task is complete, the parent program usually deletes the file automatically.

Because .TMP is not a standardized format, it has no native viewer. You cannot simply double-click it. The internal data varies completely depending on the software that created it. For example, a .TMP file might actually be a hidden ZIP archive, a JPG image, an EXE executable, or a PDF document.

This extreme fragmentation is the main disadvantage of .TMP files. They are essentially orphaned fragments of data. Users typically encounter them when a program crashes before saving a file properly. Recovering the data requires identifying the true underlying format. Leaving files as .TMP makes them useless, inaccessible, and invisible to standard file managers or web browsers.

To make the file usable, you must convert it or rename it based on its original intent. For document recovery, analyze and convert to DOCX or PDF. If the file is a cached image, convert to JPG or PNG for web use.

Convert.Guru analyzes your TMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TEMP, JPG, CHCK, WEBP, PDF, TPM, _TMP, PNG, DOCX, CRYPT14, ZIP, TXT and AVIF files.
