About XPS files

The .XPS file extension primarily represents the XML Paper Specification, a fixed-layout document format developed by Microsoft to compete with PDF. It uses XML markup and ZIP compression to preserve the precise visual appearance of a document - fonts, images, and layout remain static regardless of the device. However, while .XPS was once a standard print-to-file target in Windows, it has largely been abandoned.

Users today face significant friction: Windows 11 does not install the XPS Viewer by default, requiring a manual setup in "Optional Features." Furthermore, macOS, iOS, and Android have no native support for the format, making these files impossible to open without third-party tools. For 3D enthusiasts, .XPS may also refer to 3D character models used in XNALara (XPS Posing Studio), though this is less common.

The XPS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XPS converter.
