About CDW files

The .CDW file extension serves as the native 2D drawing format for KOMPAS-3D, a comprehensive computer-aided design system developed by ASCON. These files contain technical blueprints, schematics, and engineering layouts, often used heavily in manufacturing and industrial sectors.

While highly functional within the ASCON ecosystem, .CDW files present significant barriers for collaboration outside of it. The format is proprietary, meaning standard CAD viewers and competitors like AutoCAD cannot open these files natively without specific plugins or conversion. This "lock-in" creates friction when sharing technical documentation with clients who do not license KOMPAS-3D software. To overcome these compatibility hurdles, users typically convert .CDW files to PDF for universal viewing and printing, or to DWG and DXF to ensure interoperability with other CAD platforms.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CDW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PDF, FRW, SPW, BAK, M3D, SIG, ZIP, XMCD, PLAN, KDW, CDF, CDV and DWG files.

The CDW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CDW converter.
