A .SGN file is primarily an Electronic Document Digital Signature. It is used to verify the authenticity, origin, and integrity of digital documents. These files are typically generated by regional cryptographic software, such as CryptoPro CSP, or electronic reporting systems like SBIS and SKB Kontur. A smaller percentage of .SGN files act as vector design documents for traffic signs in SignCAD or legacy project templates in The Print Shop.
The main disadvantage of the signature format is its high dependency on specific, localized software. Many .SGN files are detached signatures. This means the file contains only the cryptographic hash and is completely useless if you lose the original document it was meant to sign. Furthermore, verifying or extracting data often requires a paid license for a specific cryptographic provider. Without the correct root certificates installed on your operating system, the file appears as unreadable binary data. Design-based .SGN files face similar vendor lock-in; they cannot be opened natively in standard web browsers or regular image viewers.
To work around these limits, conversion or extraction is necessary. For digital signatures, convert the file to XML or TXT to read the raw certificate metadata and signer details. If it is an attached signature that encapsulates the source document, extract the payload to PDF or DOCX for standard viewing.
