About SNG files
.SNG is a highly fragmented file extension universally used as an abbreviation for "Song". Because it is so generic, it serves as a proprietary audio project, MIDI sequence, or lyric container for over a dozen completely unrelated software and hardware platforms. The most common origins include Korg synthesizer workstations, n-Track Studio recording sessions, Soundtrap by Spotify cloud projects, Clone Hero rhythm game charts, and even church lyric presentations via SongBeamer.
This extreme fragmentation is the biggest disadvantage of the format. A .SNG file is rarely an actual audio stream like an MP3 or WAV. Instead, it contains proprietary project instructions, plain text lyrics, or compiled JSON structures. Because they are closed-ecosystem project files, standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot play them. Furthermore, opening a Korg binary .SNG in a text editor will yield corrupted garbage, while a SongBeamer .SNG is just standard UTF-8 text.
You cannot passively "play" a .SNG file without the original application. For general playback, you must render or export the project to an audio format like MP3, WAV, or FLAC. If the file contains sheet music or sequencing data, target the universal MID (MIDI) format. If the file is a lyric sheet, converting it to TXT or PDF is best. The SNG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SNG converter.
