The .UDF file format is most commonly associated with the UYAP Document Format, which is the official digital document standard for the Turkish judicial system (National Judiciary Informatics System). These files are generated by the Uyap Kelime İşlemci (UYAP Word Processor) and are used by lawyers, citizens, and court officials to draft, digitally sign, and submit legal documents. Less frequently, a .UDF file may act as a backup for a Ricoh printer address book, a satellite receiver channel database for GTMedia devices, or a Universal Disk Format disk image.
A major disadvantage of the UYAP .UDF file is its extremely proprietary nature. While structurally it is just a ZIP container holding XML data, it cannot be natively opened, viewed, or edited by standard word processors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Furthermore, they contain digital signature validation layers that can complicate external editing.
