About P7S files
A .P7S file is a PKCS #7 digital signature typically attached to an email or document to verify the sender's identity and ensure the message has not been altered. These files rely on the Cryptographic Message Syntax standard. Users usually process them automatically using Adobe Acrobat Reader or modern email clients like Microsoft Outlook. The primary disadvantage of the .P7S format is its highly specialized, proprietary nature. It is completely unsupported by standard web browsers or text editors. When an email client lacks S/MIME support, it confusingly dumps an unreadable smime.p7s attachment into the user's inbox. Opening these files directly in basic software results in a screen full of garbled, encoded text. Users frequently need to convert a .P7S file to PDF, TXT, or CER to extract readable message content or certificate data. However, extracting this data completely breaks the cryptographic signature, destroying the legal verification properties of the file. This file format is inherently difficult to open or convert because it depends heavily on localized public key infrastructure and cryptographic hashing. Often, only the original email client or PDF reader can properly decrypt and display the embedded data. Our tool can inspect the file and attempt to show the underlying text or internal certificate content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your P7S file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert P7S file to PDF, XPS, PEM, PFX, JPG, SIG, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT or PAGES, you can use Microsoft Outlook or similar software from the "Digital Signature Verification" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to P7S, try Microsoft Outlook or another comparable tool in the "Digital Signature Verification" category.
The P7S Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our P7S converter.
