About ENC files
The .ENC file extension indicates an encoded or encrypted file. It is not a single, standardized format but a generic label applied by dozens of different applications to lock or encode data. Common legitimate uses include Google Photos archive backups, WhatsApp chat histories, and secure telematic court filings in the Italian legal system. It is also used as a proprietary project file for older Encore music notation software and as a secure output for OpenSSL.
The biggest disadvantage of a .ENC file is its complete opacity. You cannot open it natively in web browsers, Windows, or macOS. Without the original software and the specific decryption key, the data inside is completely useless. Furthermore, because the extension is generic, users often struggle to identify which program created it. This confusion is actively exploited by the STOP/Djvu ransomware family, which maliciously appends the .ENC extension to user files after encrypting them and holding them hostage.
Because the internal structure varies wildly, you must identify the source before you can convert it. If the file is a weakly encoded Google Photos export, you can extract the internal JPG for viewing. If it is an Encore music score, you should convert it to PDF for printing or MusicXML for editing in modern notation software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ENC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ENC file to JPG, PNG, PDF, MP4, XML, TXT, JPEG, MP3, BAK, BACKUP, OLD or TMP, you can use OpenSSL or similar software from the "Encrypted Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to ENC, try OpenSSL or another comparable tool in the "Encrypted Data Storage" category.
The ENC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ENC converter.
