The .PLAN file extension is primarily used to store room layouts, floor plans, and architectural designs. It is most heavily associated with Remplanner, an online interior design tool that saves project data locally in a structured JSON format. It is also the native project file format for Chief Architect, a professional home design software. Additionally, developers use the .PLAN extension for execution plan files generated by HashiCorp Terraform.
The major disadvantage of .PLAN files is their highly proprietary and fragmented nature. A .PLAN file created in Chief Architect requires an expensive software license to open, view, or print. Clients and contractors cannot open these files on their phones or standard computers. Similarly, Remplanner files are useless without the specific web platform. Because standard online converters cannot read these closed 3D or CAD data structures, converting them directly is extremely frustrating.
If you need to share these designs, you must convert the .PLAN file to universal formats like PDF, JPG, or PNG. Converting to PDF is the best option because it preserves scale and enables easy printing. However, converting to a flat image or document means you will lose all 3D navigability, layer metadata, and editing capabilities.
These file formats are notoriously difficult to convert online. Often, only the original authoring software can properly render the complex CAD models or parse the specific JSON data arrays.
