The .PST (Personal Storage Table) file is the proprietary backbone of Microsoft Outlook on Windows, acting as a local database for emails, calendar events, contacts, and tasks. While efficient for offline storage within the Microsoft ecosystem, .PST files pose significant accessibility challenges: they are notoriously difficult to open without a licensed installation of Outlook, are prone to corruption when exceeding file size limits (historically 2GB, now larger but still risky), and cannot be natively viewed on mobile devices or web browsers. Users often need to convert these files to migrate away from Outlook, extract data for legal discovery, or simply access old archives on a Mac or Linux system.
For email migration to clients like Mozilla Thunderbird or Apple Mail, converting to the standard MBOX format is ideal. To archive specific messages for legal or long-term storage, converting to PDF ensures the content remains unalterable and universally viewable. For transferring contacts, VCF or CSV are the preferred targets. Less commonly, a .PST file may be a post-processor file used by CAM software like Mastercam or ESPRIT, requiring specialized industrial software to open.
