About DBX files

The .dbx file extension is primarily associated with Outlook Express, the discontinued email client included with Windows 98 through Windows XP. These files function as individual folders within the mailbox; for example, Inbox.dbx stores received messages, while Folders.dbx acts as the master index for the directory structure. Because Microsoft switched to the PST format for Outlook and EML for Windows Live Mail, modern systems cannot natively open or import .dbx files. This creates a significant 'digital rot' problem where archiving legacy emails requires specialized conversion tools.

A secondary but notable use (approx. 5%) is as a SQLite database file or an AutoCAD ObjectDBX extension. For email recovery, the practical constraint is often corruption: legacy .dbx files had a strict 2GB limit, and exceeding this often rendered the entire folder unreadable. To access these emails today, users must convert them to PST for use in modern Outlook, or EML / MBOX for universal compatibility with clients like Thunderbird or generic text editors.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DBX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted INBOX, DXB, PST, DBF, DPX, XCF, WAB, PDF, BAK, APKG, L, DEVICE and MBOX files.

The DBX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DBX converter.
