About DBX files

The .DBX file extension is most commonly associated with Outlook Express, a discontinued email client developed by Microsoft. These files act as local database repositories, storing email messages, offline folder structures, and mail configurations. Each user folder in the email client (e.g., Inbox, Sent Items) maps to a distinct .DBX file on the local hard drive.

The main disadvantage of the .DBX format is its absolute obsolescence. Outlook Express has not been included in Windows since Windows XP. Consequently, modern email platforms like Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird cannot natively open or directly import these raw files without using intermediate legacy tools. The format relies on a proprietary, closed binary structure, making manual data extraction or text-editor recovery virtually impossible.

To preserve old emails, users must convert .DBX files to standard mail formats like EML (for individual messages), PST (for modern Microsoft Outlook), or MBOX (for Thunderbird or Apple Mail). Converting to EML is highly recommended as it preserves raw email headers, HTML formatting, and MIME attachments without vendor lock-in.

This closed file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online. Standard web-based converters fail because parsing the proprietary binary structure to extract distinct MIME streams is highly complex, and often, only the original software can properly export the mailbox data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying structure - such as an embedded SQLite database, an AutoCAD ObjectDBX module, or a Dropbox cache - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DBX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted INBOX, DXB, PST, DBF, DPX, XCF, WAB, PDF, BAK, APKG, L, DEVICE and MBOX files.

The DBX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DBX converter.
