About PSI files

The .psi extension represents a 'Container of Confusion' for many users, as it is shared by two completely different software ecosystems: video surveillance and image editing.

  1. Arecont Vision Surveillance Index: The most common .psi file (approx. 22%) is a proprietary Search Index generated by Arecont Vision Costar NVR systems. Crucial Warning: This file does not contain the actual video footage. It is a lightweight data map used by the player to navigate the heavy video stream (often stored in accompanying .av or .video files). Users often try to convert this file to MP4, but it will fail because it lacks pixel data. To view the footage, you must locate the companion video file and use the official Arecont Vision IP Utility or ConteraVMS to export it to AVI or MP4.
  2. PhotoScape Project File: If you are a designer, your .psi file is likely a project created in PhotoScape X. Similar to a PSD in Photoshop, this file stores non-destructive editing data, including frames, objects, and text layers. These files cannot be opened in web browsers or standard image viewers. To convert them for web use (Social Media, Websites), you must open them in PhotoScape and export them as JPG, PNG, or WEBP.
  3. Other Uses: Less frequently, .psi files act as ZIP-compressed diagnostic logs for Forguncy Server or PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) database files based on SQLite.
