About PTS files
A .PTS file is primarily an ASCII-based 3D point cloud data file. It stores spatial XYZ coordinates, and often intensity or RGB color values, captured by 3D laser scanners from brands like Leica Geosystems. It is heavily utilized in surveying, digital twinning, and dental CAD. Other common uses include panorama stitching instructions in PTGui and legacy audio session files for Avid Pro Tools. You can open .PTS point clouds with Autodesk ReCap, Leica Cyclone, or the open-source CloudCompare. Because .PTS files are stored as plain text, they are incredibly inefficient. A high-resolution 3D scan saved as a .PTS file can easily exceed 50GB, making it nearly impossible to share via email, sync to cloud drives, or load quickly on standard computers. Opening them requires expensive, specialized CAD software or high-end workstations. Furthermore, PTGui project files are useless without the source photos, and legacy Pro Tools sessions often fail to open in modern studios. To make 3D scan data manageable, convert .PTS to binary formats like .PLY or .E57 for vastly smaller file sizes and faster rendering. For web-based 3D viewers, convert to .GLTF or .OBJ.
