About PTS files
The .PTS file extension primarily represents 3D Point Cloud Data, a format widely utilized in surveying, LiDAR scanning, and photogrammetry. These files are typically generated by Leica Geosystems scanners and software like Leica Cyclone. A .PTS file is essentially a plain text (ASCII) container that lists the number of points followed by rows of X, Y, Z coordinates, often including intensity and RGB color values.
While the ASCII nature makes .PTS files easy to parse, they suffer from significant drawbacks in professional workflows. They are uncompressed, resulting in massive file sizes compared to binary alternatives like LAS or LAZ. Furthermore, they lack the standardized header metadata found in the E57 format, leading to potential scaling or coordinate system errors when importing into CAD tools. To optimize storage and compatibility, users typically convert .PTS to LAS (industry standard), LAZ (compressed archiving), or RCP for integration with Autodesk ReCap and AutoCAD. Note: .PTS is also used for legacy Pro Tools sessions and PTGui panorama projects, so verifying the file source is critical before conversion.

The PTS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PTS converter.
