.RPMSG files are encrypted email attachments generated by Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Purview Information Protection. They serve a single purpose: restricting who can read, copy, print, or forward an email. When a user receives an email with Information Rights Management (IRM) applied, the actual message content and its attachments are encrypted inside the .RPMSG wrapper.
This format represents a significant challenge for users. It is heavily locked down and strictly proprietary. You cannot open these files without authenticating against Microsoft servers using the exact email address the message was sent to. This means users without a Microsoft account, or those trying to access the file offline, are entirely blocked. The format forces recipients into a closed software ecosystem.
Standard online converters fail to process .RPMSG files because the content is encrypted using AES and requires a private decryption key tied to a specific user identity. Converting this file directly on a third-party server is technically impossible without handing over your Microsoft credentials.
