About PSV files

The .PSV extension primarily represents Pipe Separated Values files, a structured text format similar to CSV, but using the vertical bar character (pipe |) as the delimiter instead of commas. This format is favored in data engineering and legacy systems (such as Salesforce exports or medical databases like PhysioNet) because pipes are rarely found within the data content itself, preventing the parsing errors common with comma-separated files.

However, users face significant friction with .PSV files. Most spreadsheet software, including Microsoft Excel, does not automatically detect the pipe delimiter upon double-clicking, often dumping all data into a single column. To fix this, users must manually use 'Text Import Wizards' or convert the file. For immediate usability, the best solution is converting .PSV to standard CSV (Comma Separated Values) or XLSX for seamless opening in Office suites. For web use, converting to JSON is ideal for developers.

Secondary Use Case (Gaming): The extension is also widely used for PlayStation Save Files (specifically PS2 saves exported to PS3 virtual memory cards, or PS Vita saves). Gamers often struggle with these because they are encrypted or wrapped in headers incompatible with popular emulators like PCSX2. To use these saves in emulators, they must be converted to raw memory card formats like MCR or MEM.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PSV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PSU, CBS, ZIP, CSV, MCR, MAX, GME, PS2, PS, TSV, TXT, PST and PDF files.

The PSV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PSV converter.
