About MGX files
The .MGX file extension is predominantly used as a 3D printing project file by Materialise Magics. It acts as a comprehensive container storing 3D meshes, support structures, part orientation, slicing data, and build platform configurations required for industrial additive manufacturing. Secondary uses include GIS map projects for MangoMap and saved game replays for classic Microsoft games like Rise of Nations and Age of Empires II.
The primary drawback of the .MGX format is its strictly proprietary nature. It locks users into expensive enterprise software ecosystems. Because it is highly specialized, standard 3D viewers, CAD tools, and web browsers cannot natively open .MGX files. This causes major bottlenecks when sharing files with clients or external manufacturers who do not have a paid Magics license.
To ensure interoperability, users must export or convert .MGX to universal 3D formats like STL (Standard Triangle Language), OBJ (Wavefront), 3MF, or STEP. Keep in mind that converting out of .MGX usually strips away platform-specific metadata, such as custom generated support structures and slice-level toolpaths, leaving only the bare 3D geometry.
This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert externally because it is a closed, undocumented standard. Standard online converters fail to parse the proprietary binary structure. Often, only the original Materialise Magics software can accurately read and export the full data set. We can inspect the file, identify embedded structures, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MGX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MGX file to STL, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP or SAV, you can use Materialise Magics or similar software from the "3D Printing Project Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to MGX, try Materialise Magics or another comparable tool in the "3D Printing Project Storage" category.
The MGX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MGX converter.
