A .g3d file is a proprietary 3D data format primarily used in two completely distinct industries. It functions either as a 3D model container for the open-source Racer Free Car Simulator, or as a high-precision 3D mesh file used in industrial metrology and optical scanning by GOM Inspect (now developed by Zeiss). In gaming, it stores vehicle geometry. In metrology, it holds extremely dense point-cloud data captured by 3D scanners to inspect manufactured parts.
The major disadvantage of the .g3d format is its proprietary lock-in. A .g3d mesh from GOM is often a massive file that is completely incompatible with standard CAD software like SolidWorks or AutoCAD. Similarly, gamers cannot directly import a Racer .g3d file into modern engines like Unity. You cannot open these files natively on Windows or macOS, and relying on heavy specialized software just to view a 3D model is highly impractical.
To make this data usable, conversion is required. For 3D printing or universal CAD import, convert metrology data to STL or STEP. For game development and rendering, convert vehicle models to OBJ or FBX to maintain geometry and mapping. For web-based 3D viewing, convert to GLTF or GLB.
