About G3D files

The .G3D extension typically serves one of two very different purposes, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, it represents a 3D model file for Racer, a free car simulation project. These files define the geometry of vehicles and tracks within the simulator. The primary disadvantage here is age and obscurity: modern 3D suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya cannot natively open these files. Modders looking to upgrade assets or port them to engines like Unity often find themselves stuck without the right legacy import scripts, necessitating a conversion to OBJ or FBX.

In industrial contexts, a .G3D file is a high-precision 3D mesh generated by Zeiss GOM optical measuring systems. These files store metrology data for quality control and reverse engineering. The key problem is proprietary lock-in; opening these requires the specialized GOM Suite, which is overkill for a user who simply needs to view the part geometry. Sharing these massive datasets with clients or vendors who lack the specific software is impractical. To make this data usable in standard CAD workflows (like SolidWorks) or for 3D printing, users must convert these files to universal formats like STL, STEP, or PLY.

Convert.Guru analyzes your G3D file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZIP, MTL, TXT, OBJ, 3DG, 3D, PNG, RIG, GOM, JPG, C4D, CRDOWNLOAD and FBX files.

FAQ

If you want to convert G3D file to FBX, OBJ, STL, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP or IGES, you can use Racer or similar software from the "3D Model Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to G3D, try Racer or another comparable tool in the "3D Model Storage" category.

The G3D Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our G3D converter.
