Convert MAGICS to another file type
To convert MAGICS projects to another format, you need Materialise Magics or other 3D software.
Convert a file to MAGICS
To convert other file formats to the "Additive Manufacturing Project" file type, you need software like Materialise Magics or a similar tool.
About MAGICS files
A .magics file is a proprietary project file used by Materialise Magics, an industry-standard data preparation and STL editing software for 3D printing and Additive Manufacturing. This file format stores the complete workspace of a 3D print job. It contains the 3D model geometry, custom support structures, build platform placement, slicing configurations, part nesting data, and printer-specific metadata.
The main disadvantage of the .magics format is that it is strictly proprietary and closed-source. It requires an expensive, commercial enterprise license from Materialise just to open, view, or edit the workspace. Standard web browsers, open-source 3D tools like Blender, and mainstream CAD software like SolidWorks cannot read .magics files natively. This severely limits collaboration, locking your 3D printing preparation work into one specific software ecosystem.
To share your 3D models with clients or use different slicing software, you must convert the .magics file to a universal format like STL, OBJ, or 3MF. Converting to these standard mesh formats allows broader compatibility, but you will lose the editable support structures, toolpaths, and platform layout specific to the Magics workspace.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally. Because it is a closed binary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the complex manufacturing data. We can inspect the file headers and extract readable text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MAGICS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MAGICS file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Materialise Magics or similar software from the "3D Printing Preparation Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to MAGICS, try Materialise Magics or another comparable tool in the "3D Printing Preparation Project" category.
The MAGICS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MAGICS converter.
