NWD files are Navisworks Documents, the proprietary 3D project review format developed by Autodesk. Known as the "PDF of BIM" (Building Information Modeling), an NWD file captures a static, compressed snapshot of a complete project model - aggregating geometry and data from various CAD sources like Revit and AutoCAD into a single file for coordination and clash detection.
While highly efficient for sharing, the NWD format poses significant interoperability challenges. It is a "read-only" format intended for review, meaning the geometry is often triangulated and stripped of the parametric data required for editing. Furthermore, opening an NWD file usually requires installing the specific Navisworks Freedom viewer or the expensive Navisworks Manage software suite. Files are often locked with passwords or expiration dates, and they are natively incompatible with popular open-source 3D tools like Blender or standard web browsers.
